When Hail Leaves Its Mark
On April 26, 2024, an EF-4 tornado (170 mph peak winds, 31.2-mile path) formed in western Douglas County, Nebraska and crossed the northwest metro. Golf-ball hail (1.75 inches) fell in northeast Omaha that afternoon, and Douglas County was in the federal disaster declaration FEMA-4778-DR, declared May 3, 2024.
The National Weather Service measured a 90 mph gust near Eppley Airfield on July 31, 2024. Late on April 21, 2025, 1.75-inch hail was reported 4 miles north-northwest of Boys Town. On August 9, 2025, gusts of 70 to 85 mph crossed west and north Omaha, with 77 mph measured at the weather service office in Valley.
None of that means your roof is damaged; an inspection tells you.

The Usual Scenarios
Cost Factors for Storm Damage Roof Replacement
These Nebraska figures come from published cost guides and are not quotes.
| Cost row | Figure | Source (year) |
|---|---|---|
| Nebraska re-roof, average | about $7,473 (range $5,825–$19,272) | This Old House, 2026 |
| Nebraska architectural shingles, per sq ft | about $5.50 | RoofObservations, 2026 |
| Nebraska Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, per sq ft | about $5.50–$8.50 | AskDoss, 2026 |
| Nebraska exposed-fastener steel, per sq ft | about $7.35 | RoofObservations, 2026 |
| Nebraska standing-seam steel, per sq ft | about $11.35 | RoofObservations, 2026 |
On a covered claim, you pay your own deductible. If you're replacing anyway, ask about Class 4 impact-resistant shingles or a FORTIFIED roof. Both are options, not requirements, and some insurers discount them, so check with yours. More detail is in the cost guide.
How the Job Unfolds
- Stay safe first. Keep off the roof, and take dated photos from the ground.
- Send a request. Use the form or call (402) 555-0163.
- Inspection and records. One independent roofer checks the roof, then photographs and measures any damage.
- Your call on the claim. You decide whether and when to file. Check your policy for any time limit on reporting a loss.
- Written contract. An insurance-paid roofing contract must carry a printed deductible notice.
- Permit and rebuild. A full Omaha re-roof generally calls for a city permit, which the roofer usually takes care of. Permits & Inspections: (402) 444-5350.

Insurance, Adjusters and Paperwork
A roofer's part in a claim is narrow: inspect, photograph and measure the damage, then give you a written estimate. The claim itself is between you and your insurance company. In Nebraska, only a licensed public adjuster or an attorney can negotiate a claim on your behalf for pay. This site plays no part in any claim.
What You Get Up Front
We're a referral service, not a roofer or a claims service. We don't inspect, price, contract or talk to insurers. One independent roofer gets your request and may pay us for it; you pay nothing.
Before hiring anyone, look up their contractor registration at dol.nebraska.gov/conreg/Search, though it isn't a skill check. Also get proof of insurance, both warranties, an itemized contract, a local address and references.

Questions Worth Asking
How big does hail have to be to damage a roof?
There's no single cutoff. Shingle age, wind and the angle of impact all play a part, so one storm can mark one roof and spare the next. Rather than guessing from a forecast, the roofer inspects up close and shows you photos of whatever turns up.
Can the roofer deal with my insurance company for me?
A roofer can hand you photos, measurements and a written estimate. It can't negotiate your claim for pay; in Nebraska that takes a licensed public adjuster or an attorney. If an assignment form shows up, you don't have to sign it, and it's wise to talk with your own attorney first.
What if water is coming in right now?
Move belongings, catch the drips, and mention the leak when you call (402) 555-0163 so the roofer knows it's urgent. Many roofers can lay a temporary cover until the permanent fix. Ask whether that cover is billed as its own line on the estimate.
What if the insurer says part of the damage isn't covered?
On an insurance-paid roof, the cancel clock can restart. You have until midnight of the third business day after that written notice reaches you, or after you signed, whichever is later, to cancel in writing. Deposits come back within 10 days. Policy questions: Nebraska Department of Insurance, 1-877-564-7323.
